Catching Dreams
March 27th, 2009
We’ve had a tough week here in Digitalworld when it comes to bedtime. LW, normally a pretty good sleeper, has been scared to go to sleep at night, waking up in the middle of the night with bed dreams and not getting a decent night’s sleep for days. We’re not sure what the problem is but when asked, the “I’m scared” reasons are random and varied.
I’m scared of monsters
I’m scared of zombie gerbils
I’m scared of everything
I’m just a scaredy cat, Mommy
*sigh* My normally brave little boy turns into a whiny, whimpering mess when it’s time to turn the lights out. “Mommy, will you stay with me all night?” Um, negatory on my part. Sleeping in a twin bed with a five year old boy who has no concept of personal space is not my idea of a good time.
“Stay with me until I’m asleep and hang on to me, Mom. NEVER let go.” Now I feel like I’m Rose, holding on to Jack while the Titanic sinks in the background.
I’ve tried all sorts of tricks and stories to allay his fears and DigitalRob has his own arsenal of go to sleep tricks, but LW has done everything he can to avoid going to sleep.
So I bought these
Dream Catchers. According to legend, Native Americans believe that the night air is filled with dreams both good and bad. The dream catcher when hung over or near your bed swinging freely in the air, catches the dreams as they flow by. The good dreams know how to pass through the dream catcher, slipping through the outer holes and slide down the soft feathers so gently that many times the sleeper does not know that he/she is dreaming. The bad dreams not knowing the way get tangled in the dream catcher and perish with the first light of the new day.
We hung two small ones up on LW’s room – one by the window and one above his bed – on Wednesday night….we still have a little trepidation about going to sleep, but once he’s asleep, we’re back to this…
Woo hoo!

What a great idea! We’ve had a few episodes with bedtime fears. The last time it happened, I told firstbourne that I was ‘in a mood’ and no monster would dare mess with me. It worked for the time being, but I’m going to remember this tip. I hope the nighttime gets easier for you all and LW.

I had dreamcatchers when I was little. They made me feel better too!

So sorry that the little guy is having trouble with the bad dreams. Hopefully, he’ll grow out of it soon.

I can remember having to tell mine when she was that young “the only monsters you’ll ever meet are the ones on Sesame Street.” Luckily she didn’t last in that period of being scared to sleep long at all. Dream catcher is a fantastic idea. He looks adorable sleeping. I’m glad it’s working.
